I am always amazed how people believe a group of musicians can really make a big difference with a concert. I remember the Live Aid, Farm Aid, and many other types of "Aid" concerts and the very limited impact that they had on the cause they were supporting.

I think it really depends how you measure impact. It you're simply after making money for the cause, if you're after raising general awareness of the cause, if you're after energizing those who already believe it, if you're after converting non-believers, if you're simply hoping to make people talk about the topic...
I think there are certainly things on that list that Live Earth, etc are really good at. Others, maybe there are better ways that they could accomplish their goals.
